Summary:
News media outlets are increasingly covering the current economic meltdown and often linking it to reports of suicide and suicide attempts. Is the economic crisis really causing increases in suicidal behaviors? And how can we help the media cover this topic more accurately, effectively and safely? This presentation examines the SPRC talking points on the relationships between unemployment, economic crises and suicide, describes the media recommendations for safe and effective reporting, and offers ideas for ensuring that prevention is addressed
